Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues nationwide wind warning as 'damaging gusts' set to hit

The entire country has been put on yellow alert as "severe and damaging gusts" are set to batter parts of Ireland.

Met Eireann has issued the nationwide Status Yellow wind warning - which will be in place until 4pm.

A spokesman said: "Strong and gusty southwest winds will veer westerly early this afternoon with some severe and damaging gusts; heavy squally spells of rain continuing too."

Hail showers and thunderstorms are also expected to hit on what will be a wet and windy Tuesday.

Met Eireann is predicting heavy and "squally" rain showers, while wind strengths could reach gale force in the afternoon.

It will be warmer than recent times with highs of 13C, but a bitterly cold night is in store.

A forecaster said: "Wet and windy this morning with outbreaks of rain, heavy and squally at times.

"The rain will clear eastwards during the afternoon with a mix of sunshine and scattered showers following behind, some of the showers that follow will be heavy with hail and thunder.

"Mild with highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees but turning colder later. Strong to gale force southerly winds will veer westerly in the afternoon."

"The showers frequent across the western half of the country with the risk of hail and thunder.

"Minimum temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees in strong and gusty southwest winds with a slight frost possible in sheltered spots."
