Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues fresh snow-ice warning for Leitrim, Donegal and Sligo

Three counties have been hit with a fresh snow-ice warning.

A nationwide snow alert is in place until 9am on Wednesday, with "increasingly wintry" showers expected in some parts of Ireland.

And Met Eireann has extended the warning for Leitrim, Sligo and Donegal.

The Status Yellow warning for these counties will be valid until 12pm on Thursday.

A spokesman said: "Showers of hail, sleet and snow continuing throughout Wednesday and early Thursday, leading to icy patches.

"There will be some snow accumulations over high ground."

Meanwhile, a yellow wind alert for Clare, Cork and Kerry will be in place until 11pm on Tuesday, with gusts as strong as 100km/h expected.

Met Eireann said: "Northwest winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 60km/h with gusts of 90 to 100 km/h.

"Strongest gusts associated with showers."

A bitterly cold Tuesday night is in store as temperatures are set to drop to -1C.

A forecaster said: "Very cold tonight with clear spells and further showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow.

"The showers most frequent over the western half of the country with the odd thundery burst in the northwest.

"Minimum temperatures minus 1 to plus 2 degrees, with frost and icy patches. West to northwest winds mostly moderate in strength but winds strong at times along coasts."

Wednesday will be cool with highs of just 7C, while there is also a risk of snow showers for the northwest.

"A cold bright day, with sunny spells and scattered showers. The showers mainly a mix of rain, hail and sleet, with snow showers still possible in the north and west.

"Winds mostly light to moderate west to southwest in direction. Highs of 4 to 7 degrees."
