Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issue Status Yellow wind warning for Donegal, Galway and Mayo and 'widespread frost' ahead

Met Eireann have issued a Status Yellow wind warning for counties Donegal, Galway and Mayo as of gusts of up 100km/h are expected to lash the west and northwest.

And there will also be a danger of coastal flooding in these areas due to high tides.

The national forecaster cautioned: "West to southwest winds 50 to 65 km/hr gusts 90 to 100 km/hr with risk of coastal flooding around the period of high tides."

The warning came into effect at 10pm on Tuesday night and will remain in place until 6pm on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Wednesday will dawn cold and blustery, with sunny spells and scattered showers.

The showers will be most frequent in Connacht and Ulster with a risk of hail and thunder there. Maximum temperatures will range 5C to 8C with fresh to strong southwest winds reaching gale force along western and northern coasts.

Temperatures will plunge to lows of 1C to 4C occurring early in the night but rising to between 7C to 9C on Thursday.

Conditions will be mostly cloudy on Thursday, with some heavy rain in the south and southwest.

It will turn cold again from Thursday night with a "widespread frost" and "icy stretches".

Widespread frost is expected again on Friday night with minimum temperatures ranging between -2C and 2C.

And we're in for a freezing weekend with highs of just 4C to 7C and night-time temperatures dropping to as low as -4C.
