Met Eireann have issued a low temperature warning for every county in the Republic of Ireland as the mercury is set to plunge.

The national forecaster revealed the temperature will drop to lows of -3C or -4C overnight and temperatures will remain below freezing until mid-morning on Sunday.

All of Munster, Connacht, Leinster and Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan have been placed under the Status Yellow alert from 9pm tonight until 11am on Sunday.

A forecaster said: "Temperatures will fall to -3C or -4C tonight, coldest around dawn and staying below freezing until mid-morning on Sunday."

Tonight will be dry with clear skies and a widespread sharp or severe frost with some icy patches.

Some patches of mist and fog will develop also with lowest temperatures dropping to -3C or -4C.

On Sunday morning, frost and any mist or fog will slowly clear to reveal a dry, bright day with good sunny spells in most areas.

It won't be quite as cold as Saturday with highest temperatures ranging from 4C in Ulster to 8C in Munster.

Next week, it will be cloudier and less cold with a little drizzle in places, however it will be mainly dry with very little rainfall expected.
