Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann forecast unsettled weather but White Christmas not on cards

Ireland won't have a white Christmas but get the gift of unsettled weather instead.

Met Eireann forecast Christmas Eve is set for some sunny spells developing this afternoon.

They say it will be mainly dry except for the odd shower.

Highest temperatures of 5 or 6 degrees in the north of the country, and 8 or 9 degrees in the south where there will be moderate southwest wind.

Light variable winds for the rest of the country, becoming moderate to fresh northwesterly later everywhere.

Met Eireann posted on Twitter: "Cold this morning with some mist & fog patches slowly lifting.

"Showery rain with thundery bursts in the south of the country this morning will break up in to isolated showers by afternoon, with sunny spells developing.

"Highest temps will be 5 or 6 Celsius in the North of the country, and 8 or 9 C in the south."

Christmas day, will start cold and frosty with clear skies.

It'll be a mainly dry day with hazy sunshine giving way to cloud later, bringing a freshening southeast wind, which will become strong and gusty in the southwest by evening.

Highest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees.

St. Stephen's Day will be rather damp and blustery with showery outbreaks of rain and the risk of southwest gales on Atlantic coasts.

The longest dry and bright interludes will occur in eastern counties.

Maximum afternoon temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees.

Friday will have a good deal of cloud across the country on Friday with scattered outbreaks of rain or drizzle.

There will be long dry periods in the east and southeast with mild and breezy with maximum temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees.

Saturday will bring patchy outbreaks of rain in the west and north on Saturday but a good deal of dry weather overall with a few bright intervals. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in fresh to strong southerly winds.

Sunday is set to be another mild and breezy day is forecast for Sunday with good dry periods but occasional rain or drizzle too.
