Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann flood alert as gale force winds and heavy rain set to batter Ireland

A flooding alert is in place for parts of the country as gale force winds and heavy rain are expected to lash Ireland.

Met Eireann have issued a Weather Advisory for Wexford, Cork and Waterford, which is valid from 3am on Tuesday and will end at 8pm today.

It reads: "A combination of high tides, together with appreciable, but generally sub-warning levels of wind and rain, will produce localised impacts along the south coast during Tuesday."

The national forecaster explained that advisories are generally one step below full warnings, and are often used when high winds and high tides generate a "risk of flooding".

Meanwhile Cork City Council has issued a tidal flood alert for today and tomorrow, with a number of road closures and diversions likely.

Former Lord Mayor of Cork Councillor Des Cahill revealed this morning that parts of the city are already experiencing problems, with Father Mathew Quay and Father Mathew Street both flooding at around 5am.

And Met Eireann confirmed that it is the south of the country that will be hit hardest by the wet weather today.

A forecaster said: "Rain over Munster and Leinster will extend to all areas this morning. The rain will be heavy in places. Brighter, more showery weather will follow in the afternoon.

"The showers will be heavy at times in the south. A windy day with fresh to strong and gusty easterly winds veering southerly as the rain clears, with gales for a time along the south coast. Top temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees.

"Showers will continue tonight in the southeast and east. Elsewhere it will become mainly dry with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees. Winds will ease further and become mainly light east to northeast."

And more settled conditions are expected from tomorrow onwards, although there will still be a risk of further rainfall.

A forecaster added: "A lot of dry and bright weather on Wednesday in the north and west. There will be further showers in the east and south.

"Thursday is looking largely dry and bright with some sunshine breaking through. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees. Winds will be light or moderate northerly.

"Turning cold on Thursday night, especially in the north and east where temperatures will drop back to between -3 and 0 degrees under clear skies, leading to frosty conditions.

"It will be less cold in the south with temperatures generally above freezing.

"Dry and bright on Friday with some sunshine and with daytime highs of 4 to 8 degrees in light easterly breezes."
