Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann extends rain warning to 14 counties as Ireland prepares to get soaked

Weather chiefs have extended their rain warning to 14 counties as Ireland prepares to get soaked.

The caution, which will see the country get drenched by heavy rain tonight, was originally just issued for for Munster, Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford.

However, it has now been stretched to Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, Laois and Offaly.

Up to 35mm of rain is expected to fall.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: "This afternoon, heavy rain will develop in the south and spread northwards over Munster, Leinster and Connacht this evening with a risk of flooding. 

"Highest temperatures of 14 to 16 degrees with moderate southwest winds.

"Early tonight, persistent rain will extend up over Ulster. The rain will become lighter and more showery during the night and will clear from the western half of the country by morning. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees."

What causes thunder and lightning?

Sunday will see the weather clear up somewhat, with a few sunny spells even developing throughout the day, especially in the west.

Scattered showers will remain throughout the afternoon, with temperatures hovering between 14 and 17 degrees.

On Monday, heavy rain in the southwest will spread northeastwards across the country through the day.
