Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann confirms snow to fall as subzero temperatures hit

Snow is due to fall in Ireland on Wednesday night as subzero temperatures grip the country.

Met Eireann is forecasting "wintry" showers, which are expected to bring snow to hills and mountains in Leinster and Munster.

The weather chiefs have also warned of frosty and icy nights this week, as well as a risk of thunder in Connacht and Munster on Wednesday.

A forecaster said: "Wednesday will be cold and mostly cloudy. Patchy rain in many areas at first.

"Heavier rain will develop in the west during the morning and spread eastwards, turning to sleet in places.

"It will be heavy at times with a risk of thunder in Connacht and Munster. Much of Ulster and north Leinster will stay mainly dry until evening.

"Highest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees with moderate south to southeast winds."

Some parts of the country will experience snowy conditions on Wednesday night, as temperatures plummet to as low as -1C.

The forecaster added: "Wednesday night will be cold, breezy and mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain which will turn increasingly wintry over much of Leinster and Munster with snow on hills and mountains.

"The rain and sleet will clear southwards overnight with clear periods following and with frost and icy patches developing.

"Lowest temperatures of -1 to +2 degrees. with light to moderate northerly breezes."

Meanwhile, Tuesday will be a chilly day, with hail showers possible.

The south and west are expected to get the driest conditions. Temperatures will range from 7C to 9C.

"Clear spells in early this morning with ground frost in places. Rain in Ulster will extend southwards over much of Leinster today, turning more showery.

"It will be brighter to the south and west with sunny spells and scattered showers of rain or hail. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees with fresh to strong, gusty northwest winds."

Tuesday night will be bitterly cold, as temperature dip to as low as -1C.

Rain is to develop overnight and become widespread by Wednesday morning.

The Met Eireann forecaster added: "Tonight, scattered showers will continue for a time, but will become isolated.

"It will be cold with clear spells and with frost developing as temperatures fall to between -1 and + 2 degrees.

"Later in the night, rain will develop in the west and spread over much of the country by morning."
