Irish weather forecast: Ireland to be battered by 100km/h winds and 'heavy rain bursts' in parts as weather warning remains in place

Ireland will be battered by heavy rain and gale force winds today as a weather warning remains in place.

Weather chiefs issued the Status Yellow wind alert yesterday for Donegal and Mayo, with gusts expected to hit 100km/h.

While the caution is only in place for two counties, the rest of the country will experience high winds and heavy rain.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: "Very windy today, with outbreaks of rain, mainly in Connacht, west Ulster and west Munster, with some heavy bursts in the west and northwest.

"Good dry spells in east Munster and Leinster, with just patchy rain and drizzle, becoming more widespread this evening.

"Misty in places, with hill and coastal fog. Mild, with maximum temperatures of 10 to 13 Celsius, in fresh to strong and gusty south to southwest winds.

"Tonight, rain and drizzle will give way to scattered showers, with some clear spells developing later, though staying mostly cloudy.

"Winds will veer southwest to west early on, easing a little. Mild, with minimum temperatures of 7 to 10 Celsius."

Friday is set to be relatively bright and sunny, with just some scattered showers across the country.

But the weather will remain unsettled over the weekend and early next week, turning cold and windy, particularly on Sunday.
