Irish weather forecast: Ireland to be as cold as Iceland overnight as temperatures set to plunge

Parts of Ireland will be colder than Iceland on Thursday night as temperatures look set to take a drastic plunge.

Met Eireann has recorded highs of 20C this afternoon, despite rain showers hitting many areas.

And temperatures in the midlands will drop to as low as 4C overnight - making it colder than the Icelandic capital Reykjavik.

The national forecaster has warned of a "chilly" night, but it should remain mostly dry.

A spokesman said: "Dry tonight, apart from the odd light shower in northwest, under mostly clear skies.

"A few mist or fog patches will form towards dawn in the light westerly or variable breezes. Chilly, with lows of 4 to 6 degrees."

Friday night will be similar, with lows expected to range from 4C to 8C.

However, Friday and Saturday are to be two good days weather wise.

After a cold start to the day, Friday is to get increasingly warmer with highs of 19C being forecast. The afternoon should see a mixture of cloudy and sunny spells.

And Saturday will be the warmest day of the way, as temperatures look set to soar to 21C.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Saturday will be another dry day across the Leinster and Munster with sunny spells, but perhaps turning a little hazier later in the day due to high cloud.

"Breezier conditions in Connacht and Ulster will bring thicker cloud in from the northwest during the afternoon.

"Outbreaks of rain look likely to develop in parts of Connacht and west Ulster by the late afternoon and evening.

"Top temperatures will range 16 to 21 degrees, with the highest values in the east and southeast."
