Irish weather forecast: Ireland set for week of 'heavy rain and strong winds' as 'mobile Atlantic regime' takes hold

Ireland is set for a wet and windy week as a "mobile Atlantic regime" brings a spell of bad weather.

Despite a slight rise in temperatures, heavy showers and strong gusts are expected to affect most of the country.

Saturday will be mainly cloudy with a mix of sun and showers, before things take a turn for the worse tomorrow night.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: "Windy on Sunday night, especially in parts of the west and north where south to southwest winds are likely to increase to gale force in exposed places overnight.

"Thickening cloud will bring a spell of heavy rain to western counties overnight. Lows of 6C to 8C.

"Wet and windy on Monday morning with heavy rain and strong to gale force southerly winds for a time, but cooler, brighter conditions will develop for the afternoon with sunny spells and scattered showers.

"Afternoon temperatures of 7C to 10C and winds becoming fresh westerly.

"Cooler early Monday night, but turning milder overnight in freshening south to southwest winds and rain developing."

Tuesday will be very windy with spells of "persistent and heavy" rain at times, with it being slightly drier in the east and south.

Things will turn cooler on Tuesday night as temperatures fall to 2C.

Wednesday will be dry early in the day, before strengthening winds in the south will bring rain north in the evening.

Thursday is expected to remain wet and blustery, with the weather slightly improving on Friday and Saturday.
