Irish weather forecast: Heavy rain, hail and thunder to rattle Ireland as temperatures plunge well below zero

Heavy rain, hail and thunder are set to hit Ireland over the next few days as temperatures plunge well below zero.

Weather chiefs are predicting conditions to be as cold as -3C on Sunday night - although it will become a lot warmer by St Patrick's Day.

Today will be a windy day for most of the country with scattered showers although temperatures will remain mild.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Dry in most areas at first, with just a few scattered showers or patchy rain and drizzle.

"More persistent rain will develop in west and southwest coastal areas, extending eastwards to all parts during the morning and early afternoon. Becoming very windy also, with fresh to strong south to southwest winds.

"Clearer conditions, with scattered showers, will develop in the west and northwest later, extending to all parts by early tonight. Maximum temperatures 9 to 11 Celsius.

"Clear spells will develop in all areas tonight, but scattered showers will occur also, most of them in west Ulster, Connacht and west Munster.

"Winds will veer southwest to west, easing in most areas, but strong along Connacht and Ulster coasts. Minimum temperatures 2 to 5 Celsius."

The forecaster added: "Sunday, will be cold, with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, some heavy, with a risk of hail and thunder, but the showers will die out later.

"Maximum temperatures 7 to 10 Celsius, in mostly moderate northwesterly winds.

"Mainly dry, with clear spells, but very cold, with widespread frost. Minimum temperatures' minus 3 to plus 1 Celsius, coldest in the eastern half of the country.

"Winds mostly light, westerly, backing southerly later and freshening on Atlantic coasts."

The week coming will be a changeable one with St Patrick's Day taking an incredible jump in temperature.

During the day it could be as warm as 15C in parts of the country although there will be widespread rain, especially in Connacht and Ulster.
