Irish weather forecast: Freezing temperatures set to return as Met Eireann predicts chilly night

Freezing temperatures will make a brief return as the mercury is set to drop to as low as 0C on Thursday night.

Met Eireann is forecasting a chilly night with frost and fog patches expected to develop.

However, earlier on Thursday will be mild with highs of 12C. But the weather chiefs are predicting a blustery day, while rain will hit most of Ireland.

A forecaster said: "Today will be mild and blustery. Rain will develop in the west early this morning and spread eastwards across the country.

"Brighter weather will follow for a time. But further outbreaks of showery rain will spread from the west this afternoon and evening.

"Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees with fresh to strong, gusty south to southwest winds."

It will continue to be blustery overnight. Any outbreaks of rain will be begin to clear eastwards.

Lowest temperatures will range from 0C to 4C.

The forecaster added: "Tonight will start off cloudy and blustery with outbreaks of showery rain.

"The rain will gradually clear southeastwards with clear spells following.

"Fresh southwest winds will veer moderate northwesterly. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees with frost in sheltered areas. Some mist or fog may develop also."
