Irish weather forecast: Cold snap to bring hail, sleet and snow and Status Yellow warning issued for Donegal

Ireland is to be hit with hail, sleet and snow as a cold spell grips the country over the next few days.

Wednesday will see showers turn to sleet and even snow before it becomes bitterly cold overnight.

And the northwest will feel the chill the most, with a snow/ice warning issued for Donegal yesterday.

Temperatures here will remain in single figures with highs of just 4C to 6C.

Met Eireann cautioned: "Showers will turn increasingly wintry during Wednesday with a mix of hail, sleet and snow, leading to icy conditions on untreated surfaces. Some localised accumulations will occur."

The warning is valid from 3pm on Wednesday, March 11, until 8am on Thursday, March 12.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: “It will be cold and blustery with some sunshine but also widespread showers.

“The showers will turn increasingly wintry during the day with hail and sleet possible.

"Highest temperatures from 7C to 10C in fresh to strong and south-west winds.

"Clear spells and scattered wintry showers overnight with snow in parts.

“Minimum temperatures of -1C to 2C in strong and gusty west or south-west winds with some frost and ice.

Meanwhile, Thursday will be cold and windy with sunny spells and widespread showers and longer spells of rain. There will be some wintry falls, mainly sleet and mainly on high ground.

Highest temperatures will reach just 5C to 8C.

Friday will be dry to start with some sunny intervals but rain will move into the southwest in the morning, before extending nationwide.
