Irish weather forecast: Cold and frosty day ahead with temperatures to plunge to -2C tonight

Temperatures will plunge to lows of -2C tonight as the cold and frosty weather is expected to continue over the bank holiday.

Bring out the winter woollies as temperatures are set to plummet in the coming days.

Today will be dry and mostly sunny and after a crisp frosty start, temperatures will creep up to highs of 8C to 11C.

But tonight will be very cold with a widespread sharp ground frost and some mist and fog inland.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: “Sunday night will be cold, calm, clear and frosty with overnight lows of -2C to plus 2C.

“Some icy patches possible too.

“It will be cool and largely dry on Monday and for much of Tuesday, with frost setting in after dark.

“On Monday, early frost will clear to give a mostly dry day with spells of hazy sunshine but cloudier spells also with the risk of a few light showers up along the east coast.”

On Monday night, most areas will stay dry with clear spells, though some outbreaks of rain may move into parts of the southwest.

It will continue to be cold with local frost and overnight lows of 0C to 5C.

Easterly breezes will be mostly light, except up along south and east coasts, where they will be a little fresher.
