Irish weather forecast: Cloudy day in store as Met Eireann predicts highs of 22C with scattered showers

We're in for a fairly muggy summers day with mild temperatures of 22C expected, but it won't be particularly sunny.

Clouds will dominate the sky across much of the country, giving way to scattered outbreaks of rain and occasional breaks of sunshine.

Tomorrow will be a little brighter with clouds expected to give way to the sun in many areas.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A few bright spells at first in the far south, but mostly cloudy today, with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle, dying out in many areas this afternoon, but persisting in some parts, mainly in parts of Munster and south Leinster and along some western coasts.

"It will brighten up in the north and northwest with sunny spells developing.

"Maximum temperatures 15 to 22C, coolest in Atlantic coastal counties and in the north. Winds will be light, northwesterly or variable."

Tonight is expected to be mainly try but temperatures may drop to as low as 5C in some parts of the country.

A forecaster continued: "Tonight will be mainly dry, with clear spells in the northern half of the country, where it will be quite cool, with minimum temperatures of 5 to 9C.

"Milder and mostly cloudy in the southern half of the country, with a few patches of light rain or drizzle, mainly along the south coast.

"Minimum here 12 to 15C. In calm conditions, patches of mist and fog will form."

Sunday will see much of the same weather with persistent cloud but more sunny spells around the country.

Met Eireann added: "Sunday will be a dry day in most areas with some bright or sunny spells, mainly in the north and northwest.

"Cloudy in many areas, with patchy light rain or drizzle mainly along southern and western coasts.

"Maximum temperatures 15 to 22C, coolest in northern, western and southwestern coastal areas. Winds light and variable."
