Irish weather forecast: Chilly start to Monday and temperatures to fall below zero tonight

It's a freezing start to Monday morning with temperatures hovering around 6C but feeling more like 4C.

And Met Eireann have warned that temperatures will drop to lows of -1C tonight in parts of the country with a slight grass frost expected.

A forecaster said: "Dry today with a mix of cloud and sunshine. The best of the sunshine will be in the south and east of the country, with cloudier conditions in the west and north.

"After a chilly start temperatures will rise to 10C to 12C in light northwest or variable breezes."

Tonight will see temperatures plunge to lows of -1C to 4C with a slight grass frost.

And forecasters are warning of heavy rain later in the week.

Tuesday will start off bright but will become cloudy and breezy later as well. It will stay largely dry though.

Highest temperatures of 11C to 13C. Southwest winds will increase moderate to fresh later in the day.

Meanwhile, Wednesday will see a deluge of rain move from the west across the country.

A forecaster said:"Rain in the west will gradually spread across the country. The rain will turn heavy at times in the west. It will become breezy as well with fresh and gusty southerly winds.

"Early Wednesday night the rain will clear with just a few showers following. Minimum temperatures of 4C to 7C in light westerly breezes."

It looks like it will be mostly dry on Thursday with some sunny spells. Highest temperatures will be between 9C and 12C in light breezes.
