Temperatures plunged to below freezing point last night, making it a cold and chilly start to Bank Holiday Monday.
According to Met Eireann, temperatures of -3C were recorded in Markree Castle in Sligo and Mount Dillon in Roscommon overnight.
And lows of -1C were recorded at the Phoenix Park weather station in Dublin.
The bank holiday will start off frosty and foggy but this will give way to a dry day in most areas, with bright or sunny spells.
A forecaster said: "However, some scattered showers will occur along north and northwest coasts and there is a slight chance of a few isolated light showers along south and southeast coasts.
"Maximum temperatures 8C to 11C. Winds becoming mostly moderate northeasterly, strengthening along southern and western coasts."
But although it'll be fairly pleasant today, temperatures will plunge again tonight, dropping to lows of -1C inland.
A forecaster said: "Tonight will be dry in most areas, with clear spells, but it will be mostly cloudy in the south and southwest, with patchy rain and drizzle in southwest coastal areas.
"Minimum temperatures minus 1C to plus 3C inland, coldest in Ulster, but temperatures range 4C to 7C along east and south coasts. Winds mostly moderate easterly, fresh to strong on south and southwest coasts."
Meanwhile, Tuesday will be another dry day in most areas with some bright spells but forecasters are warning of "unsettled" conditions with heavy rain midweek.
Met Eireann said: "Very unsettled from midweek onwards, with occasional showers, or longer spells of rain. Mild at first, but turning cooler over the weekend."
And Wednesday looks set to be a washout with wet and windy conditions and heavy rain in all areas, especially southern and western coastal areas.
