Ireland weather forecast as Met Eireann issue status yellow rain warning ahead of wet and windy Bank Holiday weekend

Met Eireann have issued a status yellow rainfall warning for Donegal as heavy rain showers are set to sweep across Ireland ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend

This week has returned to somewhat of a more normal Irish summer, with thunder and lightning aplenty to make up for the rise in temperatures and the big golden thing that was high in the Irish sky over the last couple of weeks.

And that looks set to continue throughout Thursday and again overnight into Friday.

Donegal appears to be getting the worst of it, as the boffins at Met Eireann issued an urgent status yellow rainfall warning last night.

Here's what the outlook is for the next few days.

Thursday

"Mostly cloudy today with patchy outbreaks of rain in the north and west, most likely through this morning. Drier further southeast with well scattered showers and a few hazy sunny spells.

"However a band of rain will move in from the southwest to affect much of Munster this afternoon, extending across south Leinster this evening, turning heavy at times in the south and southeast. Highs of 16 to 19 degrees, in a light to moderate northwesterly breeze."

Thursday night

"Rain lingering in the east and southeast for much of tonight, clearing towards dawn. Mostly dry early tonight through the middle of the country but showers in the north and west will move eastwards to remaining areas overnight. Lows of 9 to 13 degrees, in a light to moderate westerly breeze."

Friday

"A mix of showers and sunny spells on Friday, the showers heavy at times. Cloud will build from the west, bringing a more general area of rain into the west and southwest through the afternoon and evening, with showers easing elsewhere. Highs of 16 to 19 or 20 degrees, warmest in the east in a light to moderate westerly breeze."

Saturday

"A generally cloudy start on Saturday with some light showers. The showers more frequent through the afternoon but they will ease by evening time with some nice spells of sunshine developing. Highs of 17 to 20 degrees in a light northwesterly breeze."

Sunday

"A lot of cloud about on Sunday morning with well scattered showers. Mostly dry through the afternoon with some bright spells developing. The best of the sunshine will be towards evening. Highs of 16 to 19 degrees, in a light northerly breeze."
