Temperatures will take a dramatic 14C dip over the next 48 hours as snow and ice hit Ireland.
Weather chiefs are forecasting a freezing cold swing in the weather on Wednesday night with snow expected to fall in many parts.
That cold weather will continue each night up to the weekend with frost and ice expected nationwide.
Before that however, we will get a very mild day today with temperatures as high as 13C - a big difference from the -1C expected on Wednesday night.
A Met Eireann forecaster said: " Damp and misty this morning with outbreaks of rain and drizzle clearing southeastwards during the course of the morning.
"Sunny spells and scattered showers will follow from the northwest as the rain clears. Dry in most areas by evening time. Maximum temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees but turning cooler later in the day.
"Fresh to strong west to southwest winds. Mostly dry and turning rather chilly early tonight but showers will spread eastwards across the country later.
"Minimum temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees occurring early in the night. South or southwest winds will strengthen overnight."
Wednesday will be a very wet day with the showers turning to sleet and even snow as the day goes on before it gets bitterly cold overnight.
The forecaster added: "Cold and blustery on Wednesday with some sunshine but also widespread showers, merging to give longer spells of rain at times.
"The showers will turn increasingly wintry during the day with falls of hail and sleet possible. Highest temperatures generally ranging 6 to 9 degrees in fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds.
"Clear spells and scattered wintry showers overnight with snow in parts. Minimum temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees in strong and gusty west or southwest winds with some frost and ice."
The national forecaster is expected similarly cold nights to continue up until Friday at least but no further significant snowfall is predicted.
