Irish weather expert hits back at forecasters making 'extreme' and 'pointless' predictions

One of Ireland's best-known weather experts has hit back at some online pages posting "extreme" forecasts "for clicks".

Alan O'Reilly, who runs the Carlow Weather account, is widely respected and followed for his predictions and forecasts.

However, he has urged people not to contact him about "weather models with very little support" and "way off" charts posted by other pages.

A post on the Carlow Weather account says: "Here we go again!

"Every year now we get the same few Facebook pages showing the way off extreme charts for clicks and people message me asking about it.

"Some weather pages just want the clicks and how that eventually what they post will be correct. Like a stopped clock twice a day."

The post adds: "The latest GFS charts show a plunge of really cold air from around the 20th of this month, shared on its own I’m sure it is great for clicks and likes, but the reality is that it is a big outlier on the weather models with very little support.

"What does that mean? It means that for now it is very, very unlikely to happen and is pointless showing the chart really.

"Does that mean it can’t happen? No it doesn’t and like a stopped clock it could be right, but the chances are very slim.

"If people want to like and share posts like that then work away but please don’t share them in comments on this page or message me asking about them, it’s just a waste of time.

"If there is any real signals of real cold or any extreme weather I’ll post about it."

Meanwhile, it looks like Ireland is set to enjoy a few days of dry weather this week until rain returns at the weekend.

Met Eireann is predicting that rain and drizzle in the west and northwest will continue to push down across the country on Monday night.

A clearance to drier but cooler weather will follow from the northwest later, with lowest temperatures of 7 to 12C.

Lingering outbreaks of rain across the south and east will clear into the Irish Sea on Tuesday morning.

I will become mostly dry with sunny spells and no more than moderate westerly breezes. However, a few showers will feed into the west and northwest.

It will also be a fresher day with highest temperatures of 11C to 14C.
