Irish Water warns of 'potential odour' from Ringsend plant as works carried out

Irish Water has warned of a "potential odour" from the Ringsend wastewater treatment plant over the coming days.

The warning comes as essential maintenance works begin on the site and they are expected to last five days.

During this time, there may be stronger than normal odours coming from the site while work to control future smells is carried out.

An Irish Water spokesman said: "Irish Water is carrying out essential maintenance works at the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant in the coming days in order to reduce the risk of odours from the plant.

"These works are essential maintenance works on one of the odour control units at the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant, and involve replacing carbon odour control media to ensure any odours generated in the primary clarifiers are effectively treated.

"There may be intermittent odours while these works are carried out.

"The works will start immediately and will take approximately five days. Irish Water would like to apologise for any odours that arise while the work is being carried out."

The Ringsend plant has suffered a number of overflow incidents in recent months.

Last week warnings were issued by Dublin councils for bathing spots across the capital ahead of the potential overflows from the plant.

Irish Water has previously come under fire for waiting to tell the EPA about alleged leaks at the facility.

Back in February, a brown plume discharge was spotted being pumped into the ocean at the plant.

But Irish Water said that the EPA wasn’t informed sooner as it was not “a serious incident by any means”.
