Irish viral TikTok star Megan Southwell-Kenny hopes to inspire next generation with success

An Irish TikTok sensation has said she hopes to inspire the next generation to follow their dreams and succeed after going viral on the popular app.

Megan Southwell-Kenny, 27, is a bubbly Dubliner who started out creating content on YouTube.

She covered a wide range of topics before moving across to TikTok in 2021 - where she has exploded in popularity.

Megan told the Irish Mirror that her passion for pop culture, conspiracies and true crime is what drives her to make videos.

She says: "I’d consider myself a creative, positive, and inquisitive person, I don’t take myself too seriously."

A recent bereavement and a struggle with anxiety pushed her to make the move from YouTube to Tiktok, with Megan saying that "life is too short, it's now or never.

"I've videos on the Royal Family, celebrity gene pools, the Loch ness monster, the Sarah Everard case, Naya Rivera, shapeshifting celebs, cloning, spirit box sessions, The Alien Bible, mermaid sightings, and more.

“I love the youtuber Kendall Raye, her videos inspired me to speak about true crime on social media. She's a big inspiration. I also love skincare and beauty. I'm a bit of 'pick and mix' - my Instagram is skin and beauty, my TikTok is conspiracy, pop culture and mysteries.”

She felt motivated to change her perspective after the bereavement, and follow through on her aspiration to deep dive into a variety of topics, which led her to TikTok.

“My content on YouTube was conspiracies & true crime, the videos were sparse, but YouTube left me feeling unmotivated, so I thought I’d give TikTok a try.”

As is natural these days with anyone who has built up a following on social media, Megan faces vile comments from trolls.

But she has a rather blunt and simple process on how to deal with them - as well as how long it takes to bring an idea from her head onto the screen.

She said: "I’ve been fortunate to only get the odd comment, I just block, and move on.

“I’ll plan a series in advance, breaking news on a topic, I improvise, I'll be in bed and just get an idea, and need to put it out. My audience are like minded people. If I find an interesting topic, I’ll research further, make the video, review it until I’m happy with it.”

Megan marked a milestone achievement of 100k followers, achieving success with her Prince Phillip video, captioned “What’s going on with Prince Philip”, went viral and has 2.2 millions views.

The boost helped her reach 145k followers on her account.

The ambitious vlogger shared her advice for any aspiring content creators.

"I would tell aspiring content creators, if they're passionate it’ll always translate well. Once you're true to yourself, consistency is key, just keep at it.”
