Irish Village with four bars opens at Grand Central in Liverpool city centre

A new Irish Village has opened its doors across Liverpool this week after national lockdown was lifted and the city was placed into Tier 2.

Under the new tiered system, Liverpool City Region's restaurants, non-essential stores, and salons reopen.

Bars and pubs are now only permitted to open their doors if they can operate as a restaurant, by serving a 'substantial meal' alongside alcohol.

Among those opening again is Grand Central Hall, where Liverpool's new Irish Village is based.

The village is home to four separate businesses serving up traditional Irish food and drink ahead of Christmas.

Those coming together to form the Irish Village are Liverpool favourites The Liffey, Nelly Foleys, Roe's Bar and Smokie Mo's.

The months of closure due to coronavirus gave Grand Central owners the chance to work on the main bar area, which was once known as The Barcelona.

Hayley Smitton, events manager at Grand Central Hall, said: "The whole of the Grand Central is essentially broken up into the areas.

"The dome theatre space, the hotel and the huge space that was known for years as The Barcelona.

"That space is huge and across several levels and is too big for one site. We have a huge Irish clientele who stay in our hotel every week as well as the owner's history with Irish bars so we have created four sites in one. Something for everyone you might say.2

The Irish Village will be adhering to all Government guidelines, including last orders at 10pm and closure at 11pm.

Hayley added: "This has been a terrible year for everyone and we have all been affected in one way or another by the pandemic.

"We just want to try and end the year with some normality and hope 2021 brings a vaccine for everyone and a return to business as usual in a hospitality industry that has been hit harder than most sectors."
