Irish train station 'turned into river' after heavy rain overnight

An Irish train station has been essentially turned into a river after being battered by heavy rain overnight.

A number of bus transfers are in operation after major downpours lashed the area surrounding Waterford Station.

Cork has also been hit with severe flooding this morning, with many roads across the city and county currently impassable.

Speaking about the conditions in Waterford, an Irish Rail spokesperson said: "Waterford station is still closed and Bus transfers are in operation.

"Below is a picture of Waterford station and the reason for the current closure."

There are currently two status yellow warnings in place for the county, with heavy rain and high winds set to continue until at least 3pm.

As mentioned above, Cork is in a similar situation, with the council there asking people to avoid low lying areas due to the major flooding.

It comes after Met Eireann warned that Ireland would be hit by 100km/h winds, thunder, heavy rain and flooding today as a week of miserable weather takes hold.

The whole country will be under a status yellow caution for most of the morning, with two different rain alerts in place, both of which were issued on Monday and will expire at 3pm.

But Met Eireann has also sent out another warning for extremely strong winds for Wexford, Cork, Kerry and Waterford.

It reads: "Becoming very windy on Tuesday. Southeast winds, veering southwest will reach mean speeds of 50-65km/h, gusting up to 100km/h.

"Exceptionally high tides combined with strong onshore winds gives an elevated risk of coastal flooding."
