Irish town left without electricity as two men flee scene after cars crash into poles

A major town in an Irish county was left in complete darkness overnight on Saturday after two men fled the scene when they crashed into an electricity pole.

Edenderry, in Offaly, saw residents left without power as a result of the incident.

Gardaí in the town attended the scene of the two-car crash on Gilroy Avenue shortly before 10pm on Saturday, August 14, 2021.

A spokesperson said two males from one of the vehicles fled the scene of the collision afterwards.

ESB and Fire Services attended the scene to assist Gardaí.

A car was seized and investigations are ongoing.

The village has slowly restored power since the crash - with some residents reporting the return.

One person on Twitter said: "Lol, powers been out in Edenderry and it just came back on with the tv coming on at full blast in the middle of the night. Scariest thing about it was the fact it was playing Iron Man 3."

However, the latest update from the ESB say that the fault is still affecting some services.
