Irish town 'horrified' as two men climb Christmas tree and another mounts 'flying reindeer' decoration

An Irish town has been left ‘horrified’ after two men climbed its 30ft Christmas tree damaging the lights, which the local committee claim to have cost €4,000.

Footage of the incident shows the tree shaking from side to side as two men climb to the top in the dangerous stunt.

The Christmas Lights Committee of Baltinglass in County Wicklow said it was very ‘disheartened’ after the tree was ‘vandalised’ again this year for the fourth time in a row.

In a statement on Facebook, it said: “We are absolutely horrified and so disheartened this evening with what we have seen over social media from last night. Our tree was vandalised again this year from the video we can see 2 people climb to the top.”

The committee said the lights were broken in the incident after volunteers had spent seven weeks putting the display together.

They said: “The tree lights are broken and is not lighting it is only up 2 weeks survived storm barra just to be ruined by people coming out from the pub..

“It had taken the volunteers 7weeks out most nights in the cold to put up the Christmas lights for our community..

“It is just dam right disrespectful to our community to criminally vandalised our tree for the fourth year in a row..

“The cost of the lights for the tree alone are €4000 and if they cant be mended unfortunately we won’t have a tree anymore as we have not got the funds.

“We have had no choice but to go to the gardai about this matter now.”

In a separate incident in the town, a man was seen climbing out the upstairs window of a pub and mounting a flying reindeer decoration fixed to the outside.

Footage of the incident shows the man climbing through the window as onlookers cheer him on.
