Irish tourists probed by Italian police for allegedly stealing gas for years to keep holiday home warm

Two Irish tourists are in hot water with Italian cops – for allegedly stealing gas over a number of years to keep their holiday home warm.

The Mirror has learned that the pair are being investigated by Italian police over claims they tampered with a gas meter at the holiday home to get free gas.

The pair, who have not been named, were placed under official investigation after the alleged scam came to light in a small village in Italy earlier this week.

Investigators claim the pair bought a holiday home in the village some years ago.

They went to the house on regular holidays and are alleged to have tampered with the seals on the gas supply as soon as they bought it to allow them to heat the place for free.

Italian investigators allege they stole gas worth more than €2,000 in that time.

The alleged scam only came to light in the last few weeks when the gas company arrived to replace the meter – and realised the original one had been tampered with.

The company then carried out its own checks and realised the scam had been going on for years.

The gas company reported the pair to the local police station. – and they were under investigation last night.
