Irish tourists warned against using wheelie suitcases in holiday hotspot

Irish tourists are being urged not to use wheelie suitcases in one European holiday hotspot.

Tourists are being asked to avoid rolling suitcases through the Old Town of Dubrovnik, one of Croatia’s most popular destinations, as part of a new campaign.

The town’s mayor introduced the new measure due to the noise wheelie cases make on the cobbled streets of the historic Old Town, the Daily Express reports.

Local residents reportedly complained about waking to the sounds of tourists clattering through the streets with suitcases in the middle of the night.

According to Croatian publication, Jutarnji List, tourists will be asked to carry their luggage through the streets this summer.

Holiday-goers travelling with a backpack or a holdall bag won’t be impacted by the change as it’s only targeting wheeled suitcases.

Tourists have also been urged by the Dubrovnik Tourism Board not to walk pets without a leash, not to climb on monuments or walk around without wearing a shirt in an effort to 'respect the city'.

A statement issued on behalf of the Dubrovnik Tourism Board said the city "is keen to educate visitors about sustainable tourism" but stressed that "does not penalise rolling suitcases on wheels in the historic centre."

"The city administration of Dubrovnik has not implemented, nor does it have any intention to introduce, any penalties regarding the use of suitcases in the historic centre," it continued.

"A month ago, the City of Dubrovnik launched an informative animated video in order to communicate to visitors how to be mindful when exploring the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Through this video, we aimed to showcase in a simple way the kind of behaviour we would prefer not to see from tourists, such as walking around dressed for the beach in the historic centre, consuming food and drinks in its public areas, climbing on cultural monuments, and so on," the statement continued.

"The video also included a recommendation regarding the handling of luggage in the historic centre, which, especially in the early-morning hours, generates a loud noise as suitcases are rolled on the stone streets of the city.

"The intention of the City of Dubrovnik has been not to impose sanctions but to provide quality information to visitors about the kind of behaviour that is beneficial to both tourists and locals alike."
