Irish swimmers break multiple records as European semi-final spots secured

Team Ireland broke two National Records during a successful morning at the LEN European Aquatics Championships in Budapest.

The excellent morning was rounded out by the qualification for two semi-finals in the Hungarian capital.

Success at these Championships will lead to more spots at the Tokyo Olympic Games in the summer.

And there was a welcome boost when both 4x100m Freestyle Relay teams set new Irish records.

The Women's quartet of Mona McSharry, Danielle Hill, Victoria Catterson and Erin Riordan finished in a time of 3 minutes, 44.37secs - fifth in their heat but shaving almost three seconds off the previous Irish record.

While in the Men’s event, Jack McMillan, Jordan Sloan, Shane Ryan and Max McCusker swam a time of 3mins, 16.88secs, bettering the previous record that was set by McMillan, Sloan, Ryan and Robbie Powell at the 2019 World Championships.

Unfortunately, neither side managed to qualify for tonight's finals, though they are in a much better place in terms of qualifying for the games than they were previously.

There will be Irish interest in tonight's action though in the individual events.

Conor Ferguson (Larne) will go off in the 50m Backstroke Semi-Final at 17.24, while Darragh Greene (National Centre Dublin) is in the 100m Breaststroke Semi-Final at 17.53.

As it stands, four Irish swimmers have already secured spots at the Olympics - McSharry, Ryan, Greene and Daniel Wiffen.
