Irish starlet Aaron Connolly bags sensational brace in first Premier League start

Irish teenager Aaron Connolly has announced himself as a genuine option for Mick McCarthy's Ireland as he bagged himself a brace for Brighton today.

The 19-year-old made his first Premier League start for Brighton and Hove Albion against Tottenham Hotspurs, and has taken the opportunity by the scruff of the neck.

The Galway man made scored his first in the first-half with a tidy finish before scoring a cracking second goal later in the game.

Already 2-0 up, he picked up possession on the left flank, brought it into the box and cut onto his right foot before bending it into the bottom right corner to seal victory for Graham Potter's men.

Ireland manager Mick McCarthy left Connolly out of the squad to face Georgia and Switzerland, despite the Boys in Green short on attacking options with marksman David McGoldrick an injury concern.

But the high-flying teenager could yet get the call-up from McCarthy, but will have to be taken from Stephen Kenny's under-21 squad if that happens.

The goals this afternoon made Connolly the 100th Irishman to score a Premier League goal and the first teenager to score a goal for Brighton at Premier League level.

The last Irish teenager to score a brace in the Premier League was Robbie Keane in August 1999.
