Irish sporting moments of the year for 2019 from Shane Lowry to Katie Taylor and Dublin's five-in-a-row

It's been an eventful year for Irish sport with soaring highs and lows we never thought we'd see.

Our country found plenty of sporting heroes, made waves around the world and even enjoyed moments that seemingly brought the whole nation together in 2019.

But it hasn't come without it's heartbreaking moments, disappointing performances from Ireland teams and even a major crisis within the FAI.

However, from the greens of Royal Portrush, the steps of the Hogan Stand and the spotlight of Madison Square Garden - history was made this year.

Here's our Irish sporting moments of 2019:

Shane Lowry's Open win

One of the moments of the decade, never mind the year.

Time stood still as an Offaly man sealed his first major at Royal Portrush - a magical moment.

After a World Cup final in 2018, the Ireland women followed it up with qualification for the Olympics - a first, and hopefully not the last.

Tipperary win the All-Ireland

The return of the prodigal son in 2019 couldn't have gone better for the Premier county. Liam Sheedy unlocked Tipperary's potential as they powered their way to All-Ireland glory in the summer.

Shamrock Rovers lift the FAI Cup for the first time since 1987

There wasn't many football stories to remember fondly this year, but the best would have to be Shamrock Rovers halting Dundalk's treble bid and ending a wait of some 32 years for Cup glory.

Leinster win PRO14 for second year in a row

Much like the football, rugby didn't steal the headlines for all the right reasons in 2019, but domestically the game has never been stronger and Leinster proved that with PRO14 success and a Champions Cup final.

Rhys McClenaghan wins a world championship medal

McClenaghan is one of Ireland's biggest hopefuls in Tokyo next year and one of the biggest moments of the year came in October when he became the first Irish gymnast to ever take home a medal in the world championships.

Dublin Ladies win three-in-a-row All-Irelands

Mick Bohan's side are following in the footsteps of their male counterparts in dominating Gaelic Football and this year they sealed a third All-Ireland in a row. Serial losers no more.
