Irish sporting bodies prepare to lobby Government for return of fans to stadiums

The FAI, GAA and IRFU are working on the development of a proposal for the safe return of fans to stadiums.

Irish sporting events are currently being held behind-closed-doors amid the Covid-19 pandemic but there have been moves around Europe to allow limited attendances at outdoor sports fixtures.

Ulster's PRO14 rugby final clash with Leinster will be held at a near-empty Aviva Stadium, with only officials, players, backroom teams, ground staff, referees, some journalists and photographers in attendance.

But when Ulster take on Toulouse in France in the Champions Cup quarter-final on September 20, 5,000 fans will be allowed to attend in a 19,000-seater stadium.

10 venues in the UK will be trialing limited crowds of 1,000 this month. Fans had been expected back in stadiums there from October 1, but rising coronavirus cases and tighter restrictions on social gatherings from the UK Government look set to affect those plans.

"The FAI, GAA and IRFU met today to discuss a collaborative approach to the development of a submission to Government on a roadmap for the safe return of supporters to stadia," a joint-statement released today read.

"It has been agreed that a further meeting will be held early next week, following the publication of the Government’s new roadmap for living with COVID-19. This meeting will consider how the three governing bodies move forward together."
