Irish sport stars hail Tyson Fury as the Gypsy King stops Deontay Wilder

Some of Ireland's biggest sporting stars were quick to congratulate Tyson Fury after his emphatic victory over Deontay Wilder on Saturday night.

The Gyspy King stopped his American opponent in the seventh round to win the WBC world heavyweight title in their much-anticipated rematch.

Fury has a big Irish connection with his father John from Tuam in Galway and his mother hails from Belfast.

He previously held the Irish professional heavyweight title and represented Ireland as an amateur on three occasions.

The 31-year-old is also the cousin of former middleweight world champion Andy Lee, and Lee was in Fury's corner and helped mastermind the demolition of Wilder in Las Vegas.

Lee told BT Sport: “Perfect performance. Dominant. It was what was expected of him.

“I have to admit I was a bit worried at times but no, it was a perfect performance.”

Bray boxing superstar Katie Taylor enthused: "Wow! Punch perfect from Tyson Fury! Unbelievable performance."

And there was plenty more love for Fury:
