Irish shop's brilliant 'offer' that makes mockery of new alcohol pricing law

A Cork shop has unveiled a cheeky new deal that bypasses Ireland's new Minimum Unit Pricing law on alcohol.

The new law has been in place for over a week now with public opinion largely against the idea.

And Sam's Gala in Dunmanway has put signs up around their shop of the offer which states: "Buy 24 Plastic Glasses for €30 and receive a €47.34 credit note absolutely free. See instore for terms and conditions."

The credit note of €47.34 happens to be the price of big slabs of Budweiser and other beers - which would previously have cost considerably less.

A social media post by the shop has been shared by thousands with praise being heaped on the shop for the tongue in cheek offer.

The owner has made no mystery on their feelings for the new law, posting last week: "The name “MUP” is obviously the shortened version of the name of the person who devised this plan!! It stands for Minimum Unit Pricing and it’s effective from 10.30am tomorrow in the hope that it will reduce the amount that people drink.

"It goes against everything that every Retailer in the country spends their time trying to avoid, and that’s increasing prices. While there’s very little change across the wines and spirits range, the increase in the price of slabs of beer is astronomical with some going from €25 to €45.45 and from €29 to €47.34."
