Irish school forced to shut today after 11 Covid-19 cases confirmed as urgent letter sent

An Irish secondary school has been forced to shut today after 11 coronavirus cases were confirmed.

Pobalscoil na Tríonóide in Youghal, Co Cork announced details of the outbreak over the weekend.

The school confirmed on Saturday that eleven cases of Covid-19 had been notified by the HSE.

School officials sent an urgent letter to parents and guardians saying that a "very detailed" public health risk assessment was being carried out to trace close contacts of the confirmed cases.

They also asked parents not to allow their children to attend "parties or social gatherings" until public health guidance allows.

While a second letter was sent on Sunday confirmed that the school will be shut on Monday.

Príomhóide Séamus Ó Ceallacháin said that classes will continue but will be taught remotely.

However school bosses said they hope that in-person teaching will be able to resume on Tuesday.

It reads: "Pobalscoil na Tríonóide is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all our students and a safe workplace for all our staff.

"After consultation with Public Health regarding increased Covid-19 cases in our school, the Board of Management has decided that all students will be taught remotely at home tomorrow Monday 26th April.

"This decision has not been taken lightly but is necessary in order to complete contact tracing and ensure that all close contacts have been identified and advised by Public Health. This is the best temporary solution and we hope to resume classes as normal on Tues morning 27th April.

"We ask that Parents/Guardians ensure that their son/daughter stay safe and if they become symptomatic, please consult your GP."
