Irish school forced to shut after multiple Covid-19 cases as hundreds of children sent home

An Irish primary school has been forced to shut after multiple Covid-19 cases were confirmed in recent days.

Scoil Mháthair Dé in Limerick city has been hit by a number of infections.

Hundreds of students who attend the school have been asked to restrict their movements and keep safe during a "worrying time".

And school officials added that the local Department of Public Health will decide when it will be allowed to reopen.

A notice posted on the school's website on Thursday reads: "The school is now closed to ensure that everybody will be safe at this worrying time.

"We should all continue to restrict our movements and keep each other safe.

"Public Health will advise when we should open again. Wishing all families to be safe and well."

A letter sent to parents and guardians of close contacts on Wednesday asked them to immediately restrict their movements and organise a test.

It reads: "A confirmed case of Covid-19 in Scoil Mháthair Dé has been notified to the Department of Public Health Mid-West.

"As your child has been identified as a close contact of someone with Covid-19, there is a small risk of them becoming infected with the virus and passing it on to someone else.

"Because of this, we are asking you to please

  1. Restrict your child's movements.
  2. Keep a close eye on your child while they are restricting their movements. This is to see if they develop any symptoms of Covid-19 such as a fever, cough, shortness of breath or any loss or changes to their sense of taste and smell.
  3. Get your child tested for Covid-19."
