Irish rower Sanita Puspure powers to European gold in Poland

Irish rower Sanita Puspure went into overdrive to defend her European championship title in Poland today.

Puspure's victory in the women's single sculls makes her a double world and European champion.

She trailed Austrian Magdalena Lobnig in the early stages but when the 38-year-old increased the tempo, the opposition were left floundering.

Lobnig finished more than 2.4 seconds behind in second, with Greek rower Anneta Kyridou third.

Cork-based Puspure told World Rowing after the race: "It was very fast. I just kept my head down and focused on my race. I executed it the best I could, but those girls are fast."

There were more medals for Irish rowers, as Fintan McCarthy, who won world gold with Paul O’Donovan last year in the lightweight double scull, went solo this time and won bronze in the men's lightweight sculls.

McCarthy set a blistering pace from the start but was eventually reeled in by both winner Norway's Kristoffer Brun and silver medallist Niels Torre of Italy.

There was nearly a silver medal for Ireland in the women's four only for Aileen Crowley, Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe and Fiona Murtagh to be edged out by Italy.

And there was also bronze for Irish pair Ronan Byrne and Daire Lynch in the men's double sculls.
