Irish referee to make history in European Super Cup final

An Irish woman will be part of the first all-female team to take charge of a major UEFA competition final tomorrow.

Michelle O'Neill will be assistant referee for the Super Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea in Istanbul.

The Wexford woman and French pair Stephanie Frappart and Manuela Nicolosi were in charge of this year's Women's World Cup final in France.

But they will be under intense focus when they team up again at Vodafone Park and officiate the likes of Mohammed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

O'Neill referees in the FAI Continental Tyres Women's National League and is an assistant ref in the SSE Airtricity League.

Her fellow official Frappart said it was time for females to show they are as good as the men on a big stage.

She told a news conference: "We have to prove ourselves technically and physically that we are the same as the men. We are not afraid about (wrong decisions). We are ready."
