Irish reddit user impresses postman with creative recycling renovations

Living in the midst of a global pandemic with travel restrictions placed on us for our own well-being has a lot of us twiddling our thumbs with sheer boredom.

But Reddit user 'Medinvent' has been putting their time in lockdown to good use, taking old appliances that are fit for the dump and recycling them in creative ways to bring a new and unexpected use to them around the home.

Medinvent posted an image of their new postbox on Reddit this weekend, made from an old microwave.

"The waterproof postbox made from an old microwave. Painted An Post green for the sake of nostalgia. The delivery guys love it, my neighbours hate it..." they posted.

The original poster commented that letters and other deliveries have remained dry through "a fair amount of rain" so it appears that the microwave postbox holds up against the rain.

Fellow users were shocked and delighted at the "outside the box" thinking and the post was 98% upvoted at the time of publication.

"Reduce, reuse, recycle, reheat on low for 5 minutes," someone commented.

The idea has also sparked creativity in other users, who used the forum to share their ideas of repurposed household items.

"I've an old fridge in the shed. You can make a hot tub for yourself," one user commented.

"I've a friend who was ripping out an old house and stuck the bathtub in the back garden, planted a few bits around it, and fills it up with the hose on hot days. I can imagine a good size fridge being nice and roomy," another said.

But it's not jus the kitchen appliances that have people with their thinking caps on.

"An old mattress raised flower bed?" someone asked.

"You can use the springs off them to grow beans and other climbing plants," another user replied.
