US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has struck a chord with the Irish after his grandson was spotted wearing an Ireland football jersey at a campaign event this week.
The 78-year-old politician was pictured at a town hall rally event in Indianola, Iowa as part of his campaign trail for the 2020 race.
Sanders took to Instagram to share a number of snaps from the event with his 4.2 million followers.
In one of the photos Sanders can be seen standing alongside two of his grandchildren, but social media users were quick to spot that his young grandson was sporting a signature jersey of the Irish football team.
The photo garnered widespread reaction from Irish supporters who were thrilled to see the candidate's grandchild clad in green.
"Bernie For Taoiseach," one wrote.
Another said: "Hon Ireland." While a fourth wrote: "Peep the Ireland jersey on your grandson. We love it!"
Sanders is considered to be one of the top contenders for the Democratic nomination in November's presidential race against Donald Trump.
He has long been a vocal critic of Trump, who he attempted to run against in the 2016 election before ultimately losing the Democratic nomination to Hilary Clinton.
Sanders has served as the junior United States Senator from Vermont since 2007.
Early on in the 2016 race the Socialist won several key primaries against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton including the key race of New Hampshire.
He confounded critics by staying in the race until the end drawing thousands of supporters to rallies.
