Irish Rail to try new tactic that helped see huge drop in anti-social incidents on UK trains

Irish Rail are going to roll out up to 200 body cameras for workers in a bid to fight back against anti-social behaviour.

As the summer heats kick in extra security staff are being deployed on services while the new pilot project hopes to see them kitted out with cameras by the end of the year.

Ticket inspectors as well as other members of staff are also expected to get cameras with spokesperson Barry Kenny saying they're looking to adopt a UK model that helped see a dramatic decrease in attacks.

He told The Times: "What we want to do is prevent anti-social behaviour incidents from developing on our services," he said.

"We've worked with railways in the UK who have introduced bodycams and in some cases they've seen a reduction of 50% in incidents.

"What happens is the very fact that people are being recorded changes their behaviour, and stops issues from developing.

"We'll be piloting that with our revenue protection and customer service staff over the coming months.

"Obviously what we want to see, is to make the environment as safe as possible for the overwhelming majority of people who travel without making problems for others."
