Irish Rail to continue all train services but ask for small help from passengers

Irish Rail will continue to run all train services as normal but have asked for help from passengers.

Despite the coronavirus outbreak, the service will complete it's full schedule even with much lower on-board passengers.

The Irish Rail team of almost 4,000 staff will continue to work while exercising health precautions as per government advice.

Irish Rail's Jim Meade said: "We are operating all services, and will continue to do so unless public policy or the advice of health professional changes, or unless our workforce is impacted to an extent which makes service reduction unavoidable."

The train service said by continue to operate they can ensure healthcare workers and those doing essential work can still travel.

They also want to help those isolated and vulnerable continue to get around while  maximising services so that social distancing can be facilitated.

All trains and stations are being cleaned in line with health advice including door buttons, ticket machines and grab handles all being scrubbed down regularly.

Customers with tickets for intercity journeys will be able to cancel them free of charge up to 90 minutes before their journey.

And Irish Rail are asking for people's help in limiting they spread of the virus by adhering to two simple guidelines;

- Consider if your journey is necessary

- Follow the government's health advice on washing hands as well as coughing and sneezing

- Reduce cash handling between workers and customers

- Maintain social distancing between staff and other customers.
