Irish Rail statement after 'concerning' images emerge showing 'busy' DART to Howth

These were the scenes on a DART travelling to Howth over the weekend as hundreds flocked to the scenic spot to soak up the rays.

The pictures from Saturday evening show a large number of people travelling in a carriage which raised concerns among passengers.

Most people on board can be seen wearing masks but the passenger who supplied this photo to Dublin Live said it was still "very busy".

Public transport is still operating at 25% capacity and commuters have been urged to avoid traveling at peak times and only use public transport for necessary journeys.

Irish Rail confirmed to Dublin Live that there was increased pressure on capacity over the weekend but that the company carried out a number of initiatives to combat this.

A spokeswoman for Irish Rail told Dublin Live: "All modes of transport – both public transport and the road network - experienced increased pressure on capacity over the weekend.

"In anticipation of this, Iarnród Éireann undertook a number of initiatives.

"As well as the full Saturday schedule, we Increased the capacity of individual services and operated additional services on DART to cater for demand.

"Communicated extensively both directly through social media and station information, and with the support of the NTA across media, to remind customers to only travel where essential

"Worked with Gardaí to have joint operations across the weekend to address essential travel, fare evasion and prevent anti-social behaviour."

She added: "It should be noted that the 25% capacity available for use under government guidelines includes both sitting and standing capacity, and standing detailed in the images would be comfortably lower than 25% of standing capacity.

"However, as numbers travelling continue to grow as restriction measures changed, Iarnród Éireann will be resuming its full weekday service from Tuesday 4 May onwards, and will in the interim continue to provide additional capacity and services where required."
