Irish Rail reunite lost dog with its owner after 'Great Escape' sees it board a train to Dublin from Newbridge

Irish Rail have reunited an adorable dog with their owner - after the pup took a train journey from Newbridge to Dublin on Thursday.

The dog got on the train in Newbridge on Thursday morning, later arriving at Heuston Station in Dublin.

But having not been able to locate its owner in the station, the Irish Rail social media team put out the call later on Thursday morning.

They tweeted: "Is this your dog? This little dog travelled by train from Newbridge early this morning and is now being cared for by our Customer Information team in Heuston Station until we find its owner".

However, thanks to the power of Twitter, we got a lovely update just two hours later from the team behind the Irish Rail account.

"Update: Our lost dog is travelling home after being reunited with her owner who shared tales of how this little dog can scale walls and open doors! Hopefully today’s journey was the final Great Escape!"

Once that good news had been delivered, there were many happy tweets about the situation.

"All these dogs getting on the train. Did it ever occur to anyone that they may have an appointment to attend? Stop thwarting their business!" laughed one user.

A second added: "Is it just me or do the dogs always seem to catch the train in Newbridge? Heuston must be very popular for dogs. I wonder why they're not so keen on Connolly"

While a third joked: "Can a dog not just pop out for a bit of shopping without people presuming he’s lost ?!?! Give him his train ticket back and let him off on his way"
