Irish Rail responds after photo emerges of packed commuter train in middle of Level Five lockdown

There was uproar this week after a photo emerged of a packed train despite current Covid-19 restrictions.

Twitter user Mark Daly took to social media to express concerns after travelling on a packed train from Heuston Station in Dublin to Waterford.

A picture posted on Daly's Twitter account appears to show people wedged between the isles of an Irish Rail carriage that appear to breach public health guidelines.

Currently public transport is operating at a quarter of usual capacity to allow for social distancing.

Official Government advice states "Avoid public transport - except for essential workers and essential purposes only. Public transport capacity will be restricted to 25%. There is also currently a strict 5km travel limit in place across the country with the exception of essential travel."

Posting the photo on social media Daly wrote: "18:35 train from Heuston to Waterford, what’s the point having restricted seating if @IrishRail are overbooking trains anyway?

When contacted in relation to the incident a spokeswoman for Irish Rail told the Irish Mirror: "Under Level 5 restrictions, 25% of capacity is available for use across all rail services, and the overwhelming majority of services are operating comfortably within this capacity.

"For Intercity services, which includes the Heuston to Waterford route, travel must be booked in advance, and only 25% of seating is available for booking. Customers are also reminded to only travel if their journey is essential.

"We are reviewing demand at all times, and will review capacity on each service - and overall service levels – to ensure we are continuing to meet demand within the current restrictions."
