Irish Rail Cork to Heuston service delayed after train hits cow near Limerick Junction

Irish Rail passengers travelling from Cork to Dublin Heuston have been delayed after the train hit a cow.

The 5.25pm train struck the animal near Limerick Junction one hour ago and was delayed at the scene for a short time.

Passengers onboard were told what had happened and the driver apologised for the sudden stop, Cork Beo reports.

A spokesperson for Irish Rail said they are hoping to be back up and running as soon as possible.

Irish Rail tweeted: "Cork to Heuston has struck a cow near Limerick Junction expect delays to services as a result. Update to follow."

Other services that take the route could also be affected depending on how long it takes for the track to be cleared.

The train is now heading back to Limerick Junction where it will be further assessed.
