Irish Rail commuter service chaos as workers absent due to Covid-19

Irish Rail have announced cancellations and changes to their commuter timetable this evening due to problems with "colleague availability."

Last week Transport For Ireland said that "as a result of a high level of Covid-related staff absences" a number of services are not running to schedule.

And now the Omicron surge is affecting Irish Rail, as they have had to cancel and reschedule a number of services on the Maynooth commuter line this evening.

Irish Rail said on Twitter: "This is a short-term issue, as current COVID-19 levels and close contact public health compliance are affecting colleague availability."

The affected services are:

"16:01 and 16:12 Pearse-Maynooth combined, departing at 16:12.

"17:00 Bray-Maynooth deferred to 17:10.

"18:00 Connolly-Maynooth cancelled.

"16:59 and 17:10 Maynooth-Connolly combined, departing at 17:10.

"18:40 and 18:58 Maynooth-Connolly combined, departing at 18:48."

The General Secretary of the National Bus and Rail Union Dermot O'Leary told Dublin Live that on December 20 - last Monday - there were 56 Irish Rail and 101 Dublin Bus staff off work due to the virus.

He is calling on the NTA to reintroduce the 50% capacity limit on services and to realign the timetables to provide "surety" for passengers.

He said: "There's nothing more frustrating than someone waiting on the bus in cold weather or indeed a cold railway station, waiting on a train that may or may not turn up due to Covid-19 related illness.

"Whereas if you streamline or curtail the service, you have the opportunity to advertise it with some kind of surety."
