Irish pubs update: Clarity given on one closing time 'loophole' as full drinking rules explained

Pubs, restaurants and hotels will be enforcing the latest Government rules for the first weekend since they've been introduced.

While partygoers were able to stay out until late just days ago, even clubs like Coppers will be shutting their doors at midnight.

That is the one key rule change for the nightlife industry, while it was also confirmed that hotels will not be exempt from the rules.

In a note sent to hotels and seen by the Irish Mirror, the email read: “Regrettably, this means that there are no exemptions for residents staying in hotels and that the midnight closing time also applies to weddings and all other functions in the hotel.”

The email circulated to hotels across the country also read that “some members have reported that events are starting earlier, which is permitted provided function rooms are vacated by 12 midnight, regardless of whether guests are residents or not.

“Please note that the requirement for electronic ticketing (excluding weddings) continues to apply for indoor events involving dancing or non-seated hospitality, such as drinks receptions.”

Here is a full list of the new measures that will be in place in hotels:

  • Pubs, restaurants, nightclubs and licensed venues must close at midnight. However, hotel bars can continue to serve drinks for residents to drink in their rooms.
  • If you are a registered guest, you do not need to show proof of immunity to use the bar and restaurant in a hotel or guesthouse.
  • Face masks must be worn at all times unless you are in your room or eating or drinking.
