Irish pubs update: Bar and restaurant chiefs propose three key changes to hospitality rules

The chief executive of the Restaurants Association of Ireland has listed three key things the Government must do if they are to successfully reopen the hospitality industry.

At the moment, only those who have been fully vaccinated are allowed to dine indoors, while some bars and restaurants are keeping shut as some of their staff are not yet jabbed.

It comes after tense talks between representatives from the live music sector met with Government in a fiery exchange on Wednesday.

Speaking to Morning Ireland, Adrian Cummins called for three key things which the Government must clarify, as well as putting forward suggestions of his own for how the industry can reopen fully.

"We are suggesting that we could go back to the way things were before Covid-19 - no social distancing, no restrictions, everything as it was.

"Secondly, we need to start to stand down the Covid-19 passport programme, which is labour-intensive and there's a lot of work involved for us in the industry.

"And also, we need a sign from Government as to what what percentage we need to get to of the vaccine programme for all the restrictions to be gone and for the reopening of our industry?

"We'll always follow public health advice, whatever public health says, we will abide by it.

"But the Government has to level with the people of Ireland, and especially the hospitality industry, and outline in their plan, when will we get back to normalisation?

"Will that be September, will it be throughout the winter or will it be next March? We need to know, we need to plan for the future."

Crucially, Mr Cummins called for the supports for businesses to remain in place should the restrictions remain any longer.

"If we're looking at a projected or prolonged set of restrictions, then the business support has to continue alongside that. We believe that if the Government says it will be a phased standing down for hospitality, they have no other option than to support us or the industry will collapse."
